Q.) How are you handling all this fame?
Barton: I guess it's just something
that comes with the show. It's nice to have fans that
really love the show and they come up to you and recognise
you for it, but I'm just taking it as it comes. The
fascinating thing about television is that so many people
see it and you become a persona as opposed to a real
actor. I've done stage and film and nobody looks at
your twice. When you're on a TV show, people feel like
they know you.
 McKenzie:
I'm handling it fine, I guess. It gets a bit crazy when
you go out and everyone wants to talk to you or write
about you. But Peter Gallagher (who plays Sandy) gave
me some great advice when it all started by saying:
'you have to assume it's going to end tomorrow and go
out and live every day as if it were your last.' So
I do my job and let everyone else handle themselves
and let the critics take care of themselves and know
that I can't control any of it or how long it lasts.
But I've been pretty successful so far, which is nice.
Q.) Do you get recognised more when you are
out with other cast?
Barton: People freak out if we hang
out together. I went out the other night with Adam Brody,
(who plays Seth) and Rachel Bilson, (who plays Summer)
and it was a complete nightmare. They think it's 'The
O.C. reunion' and just come up and shake your hands
and make you sign autographs all night.
McKenzie: I'm a fairly private person
so occasionally it gets distracting but I certainly
accept it when I'm in public at events with other cast,
and then we all feel like we're in this together. Except
when they follow you into restrooms, which is weird!
Q.) What was your own high school experience
like?
 Barton:
I went to public school in New York until I was 15 and
I was just doing movies alongside it and eventually
it became ridiculous that I was coming and going so
often and the teachers couldn't handle it anymore. So
I took a year off and concentrated only on acting and
did school through correspondence. I did two years in
a private school in New York after that and I was in
school last year when I got the pilot for this show,
so I knew exactly what it was like to be in a wealthy
school because I was still in one!
McKenzie: I probably drank as much
as I do on the show in high school! I probably tried
to attract as many girls as I did on the show - unsuccessfully
however! And I probably punched a lot fewer people in
high school! Luckily people see me as more of a lover
than a fighter, so I haven't gotten into any scrapes
over my character on the show yet!
Q.) How different are your characters from you?
Barton: She's not a character that
I put on completely because I put a lot of me in her.
It's one of those things where if you want to make her
relatable to people, you have to do that. I want teenagers
to relate so I put as much real-life stuff into her
as I can. I wasn't raised in the kind of small, social
scene of The O.C. so I can't completely relate to that
aspect but I'm exactly the same age as the character
and I know what it's like to be in high school and date
boys.
McKenzie: I think we all feel like
outsiders at some time in our life. But I think the
initial premise of the show was not so much a 'fish
out of water' story but more for Ryan that there will
always be an inherent conflict with his past and his
future life. He's overcome a lot of difficulties to
get where he is, but the abuse and neglect have produced
all this distrust and it affects his future relationships
in a big way.
Q.) Do the writers use your own life experiences
in the show?
Barton: An entire conversation I had
with Adam ended up on a show in the first season. I
listen to a lot of rock and punk music and Adam was
making fun of me shortly after we'd made the pilot when
I told him and he said, 'you do not!' So I started talking
about all these bands and he realised I really knew
what I was talking about. Two episodes later, I found
that exact conversation in the script so now I'm very
careful about what I say on the set!

Tom Cruise

ANGELES -- Tom Cruise's production company,
which broke ties with Paramount Pictures last week in
an unusually public dispute, has signed a two-year financing
deal with an investment partnership headed by Washington
Redskins owner Daniel Snyder.
The deal between Cruise/Wagner Productions and First
& Goal LLC covers overhead and development, which
will allow Cruise and producing partner Paula Wagner
to run their company and make deals to produce films,
some conceivably starring Cruise.
Financial terms were not disclosed for the pact, which
has an option to renew for a longer term.
Cruise/Wagner still must find someone to finance production
of those films and a company to distribute them.
Previously, Paramount had the first right to finance
and distribute Cruise/Wagner films. In exchange, Paramount
paid the producers as much as $10 million per year for
salaries, expenses and discretionary spending. Paramount
had offered a much lower amount to renew the deal, closer
to $2 million annually, before talks broke off.
First & Goal was set up specifically to invest
in Cruise/Wagner. Snyder also heads an investment partnership
that controls amusement park operator Six Flags Inc.,
among other companies. Former ESPN executive Mark Shapiro,
who heads Six Flags, will oversee the investment in
Cruise/Wagner, the companies said Monday.
"This gives us the opportunity to work with all
the studios and broadens our base," Wagner said
Monday.
Long-simmering tensions between Cruise/Wagner and Paramount
Pictures erupted last week with a public spanking of
Cruise by Sumner Redstone, chairman of Paramount parent
Viacom Inc.
 Redstone
broke ties with Cruise through an interview in the Wall
Street Journal, saying the actor's public behavior,
including jumping up and down on Oprah Winfrey's couch,
and his aggressive defense of Scientology, alienated
moviegoers and cost Paramount money at the box office.
Redstone claimed Cruise's antics cost Paramount between
$100 million and $150 million in ticket
sales for the actor's latest film, "Mission: Impossible
III."
Wagner slammed Redstone last week, calling his comments
"surprising" and unbusinesslike.
She said last week it was their decision not to renew
their 14-year partnership with Paramount, choosing instead
to follow a long-standing desire to make smaller, character-driven
films on their own.
On Monday, Shapiro brushed off any discussion of Cruise's
behavior or Redstone's comments, preferring to focus
on Cruise's proven box-office appeal.
"We're entrepreneurs and we like exploring new
opportunities that present an excellent chance for success
and innovation," Shapiro said.
 Shapiro
and Wagner emphasized that Cruise's last two films for
Paramount, "War of the Worlds,"
and "Mission: Impossible III," grossed about
$1 billion worldwide combined.
"We believe that Cruise and Wagner are a terrific
investment," Shapiro said. "The track record
speaks for itself."
The deal was brokered by talent agency CAA, which represents
Cruise. Discussions with First & Goal began earlier
this month, the companies said.
Last week, Wagner said her company had secured financing
from two hedge funds to produce films. She declined
to comment on those arrangements Monday.
Monday's deal does continues to allow Cruise to star
in films produced or distributed by any studio, the
same terms he had under his deal with Paramount.

Life appears to be looking up a little for downward-spiraling
rocker Pete Doherty. Not only has he managed to avoid
landing in the pokey for several weeks in a row (as

The London Mirror, in a story touchingly titled "Crack
Together," reports the rehabbed sometime squeezes
were spotted looking lovey-dovey on Sunday at a British
music festival.
"They got out of the car and held hands as they
walked to the VIP area -- laughing and touching each
other the whole time," a spy recounts to the paper.
"They were acting like a couple of honeymooners."
Continues the eyewitness, "You've never seen a
couple so tactile. They were kissing passionately and

did you have any idea that it could possibly turn into
a hit series?
 None
of us could have imagined the kind of impact it's had
with audiences. It's been unbelievable in every sense.
We thought we had a very well-written, sexy show, which
would probably find a niche out there, because it's
not the typical series.
It works on so many different levels and treads this
very fine satirical line. It's the type of concept that
you can't really know in advance is going to work out
until you're on the set.

Jennifer Lopez closes the book
 Jennifer
Lopez has won an injunction banning her ex-husband from
publishing a tell-all book about her life.
Ojani Noa, who was married to the Latin beauty for
just 11 months in 1997, had threatened to publish intimate
details about their marriage.
He has now agreed to a preliminary injunction, which
will stop him publishing anything about the star's life
until their lawsuit is settled.
He is also barred from "criticising or denigrating"
the singer.
Both sides are now being urged to resolve their dispute
"without engaging in further litigation".
J.Lo, 36, sued Noa in April after hearing he was planning
to write the tell-all book.
According to her lawsuit, Cuban-born Noa's plans were
revealed in an article in America's New York Post in

"her tour is selling really well," and says

part for it would ensure that taking photographs from
the air would be next to impossible for the paparazzi.
"Certainly, the cover of darkness would make it
difficult if not impossible for the paparazzi to do
anything from an airborne position. Miss Kidman is making

at her Park Avenue home on Thursday and charged with
assaulting her housekeeper with a cell phone, New York
City police said.
Campbell, who was later released, could face up to seven
years in prison after she was charged with second degree
assault for throwing a cell phone at housekeeper Ana
Scolavino. Police said it struck her on the back of
the head and opened a cut that needed four staples.

By now everyone knows Madhur Bhandarkar's "Corporate"
- the second part of his proposed trilogy on metropolitan
mores and communities - will feature Bipasha Basu as
a steel-willed business tycoon. What
is not known is that the character is based almost lock,
stock and barrel on a real-life female entrepreneur.
She is apparently a very high-profile woman and well
known in social circles for her power panache and sex

I wanted to cast a woman and not a girl. The trouble
is most of our high-profile heroines seem to have stepped
